Coldplay, Beyonce, Pearl Jam and Ed Sheeran headlined this year’s Global Citizen Festival, and ONE.org volunteer leader Barb Barrar gave us her perspective on the incredible day. ONE is a global advocacy organization co-founded by U2 frontman Bono and other activists, which encourages elected leaders to create and follow through on policies that eliminate extreme poverty and prevent and treat diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Malaria.
While festival-goers rocked out, numerous artists, activists and world leaders including Stephen Colbert and Michelle Obama spoke up about achieving the Global Goals to alleviate poverty, inequality and climate change, and shared their own stories. One of the most moving moments of the day came when Malala Yousafzai, an outspoken activist who was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman as a result of fighting for women’s education rights, demanded that quality education be made available to everyone.
